American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft
Breed Standard
Height: 15.2 to 17hh
Colors: Any base color is found. Leopard Complex is favored but solids are allowed. Any eye color is allowed.
Patterns not found: Frame Overo, Splash, Tobiano or any Dominant White (aka white spotting). Excessive white markings. Also gray is no longer allowed.
The breed was founded by Everett Smith for his hitch company. He wanted a more eye catching draft horse. With the help of another newish founded breed, the Stonewall Sport Horse, his dream of a lp complex draft horse was achieved. The breed is at critical levels and currently has somewhat of an open studbook to increase the numbers.
The foundations of the breed were Appaloosas and Perchersons. Now other selective breeds are being used to increase the numbers. You can't just breed a draft with an Appaloosa and call it a Sugarbush. They have strict standards about what is being allowed into the registry.
Breeds that are currently in the Approved cross section: Clydesdale, Beglian (American), Percheron, Appaloosa. American Cream Draft (till Jan 1st 2022), Shire, Noriker and Knabstrupper. At one time Friesians were allowed but no more.
