Please be aware this is a fictional account of how the farm started.
In the summer of 1992 an Arabian filly stepped off the trailer and would become the foundation of what we strive for here at KSW Farms. The filly was unnamed and we dubbed her KSW Queen Nibbles. And a queen she would become. She started her halter career and did very well before a small injury sidelined her for a year. When she was 4 years old, she was started under saddle, western is what we do around here. She managed to do pretty good in western pleasure but it became apparent Nibbles was becoming sour and didn't like to show, she then became a brood mare.
Her first two breedings were to the Arabian stallion, Sultan Ruler, who we had acquired part interest in while he was a 3 year old. This amazing stallion soon went on to a very successful racing career before being retired for stud duty and we bought the other interest.
Soon we ended up with a three year old Thoroughbred colt named Figure, who would become our foundation stallion for our Thoroughbred program. He was a champion in his own right, racing till age 6 before being retired for stud full time.
Also in 1992, shortly after the purchase of Figure, we acquired a pair of Thoroughbred mares, full sisters, after their racing careers were over. Skydancer and Been Busted. Later that year we acquired Saga Begins, our very first dilute Thoroughbred mare. She brought along her daughter, sired by Relaunch (real), Another Saga.
It is through Another Saga that the last of the three foundation TB sire lines comes. We bred Another Saga to the British stallion Inchinor (real) in 1998 and a year later she gave birth to Vakarian, a buckskin colt who would grow into one fine stallion and produce our very first Perlino TB for the herd, Calibrations.
In 1995 we purchased a yearling Arabian colt, KSW Dune and his full weanling sister, KSW Emerald. Dune would grow up extremely bad tempered and hard to handle. As a yearling he has a bit hot. No matter what training we did, it just didn't matter with him. He always made it a point to fight. But yet he wasn't gelded because we knew we needed outside blood for our Arabian herd. So he was kept intact. He's only sired a few foals for us and was retired from breeding because of his nasty temperament. And he wasn't fully retired until 2015 and since he was already 21 years of age, he wasn't gelded. Why? Because we don't believe in gelding aged stallions. We will just put up with him.
In 2003 we acquired a weanling Arabian mare with steller blood lines. Hidden Oasis was a gem hiding in plain sight. Sure there were other more lovely marked Arabian weanlings there but for some reason that dapple bay filly was calling to me and I just had to have her.
The next year, 2004 we made the jump into rabicano Arabians with the purchase of a weanling colt, Grand Polaris. This boy was so lovely that we even bought his full sister in utero, and she was born the next year, looking just like her brother! Grand Polaris has founded a dynasty and a legacy here at KSW Farms. He's by far one of our most popular stallions, not only in looks but in his refinement and temperament. And the added bonus of him being half Crabbet and half Egyptian.
So in 2007, we bred him to Hidden Oasis, who herself is Straight Egyptian, and waited for the resulting foal. That foal, born in 2008 would be Polar Temptress, the first rabicano born here! Temptress is a lovely bay rabicano/sabino, getting her color from her dam and her pattern from her sire. So we bred Polaris to Oasis again. That 2009 foal was yet another filly, this time a minimal marked sabino in sooty bay, Desert Dreamer.
Hidden Oasis would not produce another foal until 2012 when she foaled a colt sired by Polaris. It is unknown why she didn't get in foal the couple of years before that. She was course bred to Polaris each time, checked in foal and rebred but never got into foal. Thankfully she foaled again in 2013 and is confirmed in foal for 2014. Once again bred to Polaris, the only stallion she will breed with.
I got word from Legacy Farms that they wanted to breed their mostly Polish Arabian mare, Red Hott to Grand Polaris for a 2009 foal. We agreed on a deal, to forgo the stud fee as long as I could own the resulting foal. And did I ever get the best end of the deal too! The resulting foal turned out to be a colt. And a looker he was! Clearly got both rabicano and sabino from both parents and a flaxen black liver chestnut. He looks a lot like his great grandsire (on Grand Polaris' direct sire line) Grand Sultan. So the colt was named Grand Vengeance. And he is pentacle to our very breeding program.
It was in 2011 that I contacted Legacy Farms and requested a breeding between Grand Polaris and Red Hott again. And in 2012 a black sabino filly was born. Soon as she was weaned she came to live with us and was named Hott Desyres. Her dam was exported to Germany in early 2013 so it's a good thing we did a breed back for this lovely little girl.
Also in 2009 we bought a weanling Straight Russian Arabian filly from Legacy Farms that we named Lady Katrina. This lovely mare went on to be the first bred to Grand Vengeance and surprised us with twin colts in early 2013. She has been bred back to Grand Vengeance for a 2014 foal. And she even has a half sister in the herd, The Red Halestorm, a 2009 flaxen liver chestnut who is half Polish. She's currently in foal to Grand Vengeance for a 2014 foal.
In 2009 we purchased another rabicano filly, this time a bay rabicano/sabino filly. Pagan Storm is a broodmare prospect for us because she is unrelated to our main rabicano line. This is the reason why she was bought.
In 2012 we finally got our very first Fjord! And a stallion at that! Odin's Lore settled in nicely and shortly after we bought him, we got word of a very rare gulblakk fjord mare. So then we bought Frigg's Love for him. And in early 2013 we acquired our second Fjord stallion. So we are very well on our way with Fjords!
